Stung by Union home minister P Chidambarams latest assertion that there was no flip-flop by the Centre on the formation of a separate Telangana, public representatives from the coastal region are seriously planning to revive the agitation against bifurcation of the state. The furious protests which raged in the entire coastal and Rayalaseema districts were suspended last week after Chidambaram issued a clarification to his Dec 9 stating that all the groups and parties would be consulted . However, Chidambarams Thursday remarks on Telangana have once again put the coastal and Rayalaseema leaders on the backfoot prompting them to hurriedly call for meetings.
Tension was palpable among the leaders of both the regions with Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal expressing his opposition to the Jan 5 meeting in Delhi to discuss the separate statehood issue. While Royalaseema MPs met party affairs incharge Veerappa Moily in Delhi, coastal leaders have also started consultations . The leaders of joint action committee in Krishna district have decided to convene an emergency meeting on Friday and finalise the future course of action.
JAC convenor K Sivaji told TOI that they had also decided to organise a mammoth public meeting in Vijayawada on Jan 2 ahead of the crucial consultations in Delhi . Sources said the senior leaders from the region were particularly worried over the way Chidambaram explained as to how all the political parties had supported the separation of Telangana before and after the general elections. TDP leader Kodela Sivaprasada Rao demanded that the Congress come out with a stand before convening the Jan 5 meeting. The Congress is trying to deceive the people of the state by adopting double standards. We will definitely oppose any move that goes against the aspirations of united Andhra, he warned.
Meanwhile, 25 united Andhra activists were arrested when they tried to disrupt a conference organized by BJP national executive member K Haribabu in support of Jai Andhra movement in in Visakhapatnam on Thursday. Raising Jai Samaikhya Andhra slogans, the activists barged into the Dwarakanagar library premises where the meeting was being held and manhandled a BJP worker. The activists lambasted the BJP leaders for provoking the people in the name of Jai Andhra movement. With the situation getting out of control, police entered the scene and arrested the agitators.
